Bulgaria · Rhodope mountains

Sourced from the Rhodope Mountains

Five of the six botanicals in Lung Care are native to Bulgaria. We work with local growers and wild-harvest cooperatives in the Rhodope mountain region — one of Europe's last untouched herbal landscapes — to source our key ingredients close to where they grow naturally. The Rhodopes are home to over 2,000 plant species, including Pulmonaria officinalis, the herb our formula is built around.

Lungwort

Pulmonaria officinalis

Lungwort grows wild in the deciduous forests that blanket the lower Rhodope slopes. Traditionally harvested in late spring before flowering, the leaves are dried at low temperatures to preserve the silica, flavonoids and saponins that give the plant its name. Bulgarian herbalists have used Pulmonaria officinalis for centuries to support respiratory wellness.

Ribwort Plantain

Plantago lanceolata

Ribwort plantain is one of the most common wild plants of Bulgarian mountain meadows. Its leaves contain mucilage and aucubin — compounds traditionally used in European herbalism to support the throat and respiratory tract. The plant is hand-harvested before flowering, when the active compound concentration is highest.

Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow grows in the damp valley floors of southern Bulgaria. The root is exceptionally rich in mucilage — a soft, gel-forming polysaccharide that has been used in European herbalism since the time of the ancient Greeks to soothe mucous membranes. Our roots are harvested in autumn, when mucilage content peaks.

Licorice Root

Glycyrrhiza glabra

Licorice grows in the warmer southern Bulgarian regions and along the Maritsa river basin. The root contains glycyrrhizin and a range of flavonoids traditionally used to support both the respiratory and digestive tracts. We use a standardised extract to ensure consistent active content in every capsule.

Greater Plantain

Plantago major

Greater plantain grows alongside its relative Plantago lanceolata throughout Bulgaria, in pastures and along forest paths. Like ribwort, it has been used in traditional European herbalism since the Middle Ages and remains a cornerstone of Bulgarian folk medicine for respiratory wellness.

Eucalyptus globulus is the only ingredient not native to Europe. We source it from a certified European processor that imports the leaves from sustainably managed groves.

The challenge

80M+

Europeans exposed to harmful air pollution levels daily

91%

of the world population breathes air exceeding WHO guidelines

Your lungs filter over 10,000 litres of air every day. Urban pollution, allergens, and seasonal changes put constant pressure on your respiratory system. Over time, this invisible burden can affect energy levels, sleep quality, and overall well-being.

The challenge

The solution

Lung Care provides Lungwort extract (500mg) as the main ingredient from the European herbal tradition, alongside Plantago lanceolata (80mg), Eucalyptus, Glycyrrhiza Glabra, Althaea officinalis and Plantain (70mg each). Complemented with Vitamin E, B1, B2, Zinc, Folic Acid, Biotin, Selenium and Vitamin B12 for mucous membrane and immune function support.

How Lung Care supports respiratory wellness

Lung Care is built around two complementary mechanisms: the soothing mucilage tradition of European herbalism, and the EFSA-approved contributions of vitamins and minerals to mucous membrane and immune function. Here's what each one does in plain terms.

  1. 1

    Mucilage from lungwort and marshmallow

The mucilaginous polysaccharides in Pulmonaria officinalis and Althaea officinalis form a soft, soothing layer on contact with mucous membranes. This is the same property that has made these two herbs cornerstones of European respiratory herbalism for centuries.

  2. 2

    B-vitamins for normal mucous membranes

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) and biotin both contribute to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes — an EFSA-approved health claim. Mucous membranes are the thin tissues that line the airways, and keeping them in normal condition is part of how the body's natural defences function.

  3. 3

Vitamin E protects cells from oxidative stress

Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress — another EFSA-approved health claim. The respiratory tract is one of the body's primary interfaces with environmental pollutants, so cellular protection matters here.

  4. 4

Zinc and selenium for immune function

Both zinc and selenium contribute to the normal function of the immune system, per EFSA. Together with the botanical extracts and the B-vitamins, they form the four pillars of how Lung Care is designed to work.

Inside every capsule

Lung Care contains six botanical extracts and seven micronutrients. Here's a closer look at where each main herb comes from, what it contains, and how it's been used historically.

Serving size: 2 Capsules

Lungwort extract

Pulmonaria officinalis 500mg

Lungwort is a perennial plant of European deciduous forests, named for the spotted appearance of its leaves which medieval herbalists thought resembled lung tissue. It grows abundantly on the lower slopes of the Rhodope mountains, where the dense beech and oak canopies create the cool, shaded conditions it prefers.

The leaves contain silica, mucilage, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. These compounds together give lungwort its traditional reputation as a herb for the respiratory tract — a use documented in European herbal texts going back to at least the 16th century, including in the works of Bulgarian folk herbalists who called it 'белодробниче'.

Our 500mg dose per serving is at the higher end of what's typically used in European supplements, reflecting our decision to make Pulmonaria officinalis the centrepiece of the formula rather than a token addition.

Ribwort Plantain

Plantago lanceolata 80mg

Ribwort plantain — sometimes called English plantain or narrowleaf plantain — is one of the world's most widespread medicinal plants. In Bulgaria it grows wild in mountain meadows from the Stara Planina range south through the Rhodopes, and it has been a staple of folk respiratory remedies for as long as records exist.

The leaves contain aucubin (an iridoid glycoside), mucilage, tannins and silicic acid. Aucubin in particular has been the subject of modern phytochemical research, although traditional use remains the basis for its inclusion in Lung Care.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus globulus 70mg

Eucalyptus is the only botanical in Lung Care that isn't native to Europe — it originates in Tasmania and southeastern Australia, although today it's cultivated commercially in Mediterranean countries including Portugal and Spain. We source ours from a certified European processor.

The leaves contain 1,8-cineole (also called eucalyptol) and other monoterpenes that give the plant its distinctive aroma. Eucalyptus has been used in traditional Western herbalism for the respiratory tract since the 19th century.

Licorice Root

Glycyrrhiza glabra 70mg

Licorice is one of the oldest medicinal plants on record, used in Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and European herbal traditions for thousands of years. In Bulgaria, the wild plant grows in the warmer southern regions and along the Maritsa river basin — its sweet root is collected in autumn.

The root contains glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, flavonoids (liquiritin, isoliquiritin) and polysaccharides. The traditional use spans both respiratory and digestive applications. People taking medication or with high blood pressure should consult a doctor before taking licorice-containing supplements.

Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis 70mg

Marshmallow has been used in European herbalism since the time of Hippocrates, who recommended the root and leaves for the respiratory tract. The plant grows in damp meadows and along riverbanks throughout Bulgaria, particularly in the lowland river valleys of Thrace.

What makes marshmallow exceptional is its mucilage content — up to 35% of the dry weight of the root. Mucilage is a complex polysaccharide that swells and forms a soft gel in contact with water. It's this physical property, more than any specific active compound, that gives marshmallow its traditional reputation.

Greater Plantain

Plantago major 70mg

Greater plantain — the broad-leaved cousin of ribwort — is so common in Bulgaria that you can find it on virtually any path or pasture. Like its narrow-leaved relative, it has been a fixture of European folk medicine since the Middle Ages, and Bulgarian villagers have traditionally used the leaves for the respiratory tract.

Both Plantago species share much of the same phytochemistry — aucubin, mucilage, tannins and flavonoids — which is why they're often used together. We include both in Lung Care for that complementary effect.
