Bulgaria · Rhodope foothills

Sourced from Bulgarian growers and the Rhodope foothills

All four botanicals in Liver Wellness — milk thistle, dandelion, burdock root and artichoke — grow naturally in Bulgaria. We work with local growers and wild-harvest cooperatives across the country, with milk thistle and dandelion in particular sourced from the meadows and lower slopes of the Rhodope mountains. The Rhodopes are home to over 2,000 plant species, including some of the highest-quality wild Silybum marianum stands in Europe.

Milk Thistle

Silybum marianum

Milk thistle grows wild throughout the Mediterranean and Balkan region, including across southern Bulgaria and the foothills of the Rhodope mountains. The seeds — the part that contains silymarin — are harvested in late summer when the plant's distinctive purple flower heads have dried. Bulgarian wild-collected milk thistle is widely regarded as one of the cleanest sources in Europe.

Dandelion

Taraxacum officinale

Dandelion is so common in Bulgaria that it grows in virtually every meadow, pasture and roadside verge from the Black Sea coast to the highest peaks of Pirin. Both the root and the leaves are used in European herbalism — Liver Wellness uses the whole-plant tradition, with the bitter compounds that give dandelion its long-standing reputation in herbal practice.

Burdock Root

Arctium lappa

Burdock grows wild throughout the Bulgarian countryside, particularly along forest edges and disturbed ground in the lower mountain regions. The root — harvested in autumn or early spring — is the part used in European herbalism and contains inulin, polyphenols and the bitter compound arctiopicrin.

Artichoke

Cynara scolymus

Artichoke is cultivated commercially in southern Bulgaria, particularly in the warmer Thracian plain. The leaves — not the edible flower head — are the part used in European herbalism, and they contain cynarin and chlorogenic acid. Bulgarian artichoke leaves are dried and processed at low temperatures to preserve their phenolic content.

vital functions your liver performs every single day

Your liver is your body's largest internal organ, processing everything you eat and drink. Modern lifestyles with processed foods, rich meals, and busy schedules put daily demands on it. When your liver is under pressure, you may notice it: persistent tiredness, sluggish digestion, and low energy throughout the day.

The challenge

The solution

Liver Wellness provides Choline (82.5mg) which contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function, alongside traditional European botanical extracts: Milk Thistle (400mg), Dandelion (300mg), Burdock Root and Artichoke (150mg each). Complemented with Vitamin B1, Zinc, Folic Acid, Biotin and Vitamin B12 for energy and fatigue reduction.

How Liver Wellness supports normal liver function

Liver Wellness is built on a simple idea: combine four traditionally-used European botanicals with the EFSA-approved micronutrients that the liver actually depends on. Here's how the formula is designed to work.

  1. 1

Choline contributes to normal liver function

Choline is an essential nutrient that the body uses to maintain normal liver function — this is an EFSA-approved health claim. Choline is involved in fat metabolism in the liver and in the structural integrity of cell membranes. Liver Wellness provides 82.5mg per serving.

  2. 2

    Silymarin from milk thistle

Silybum marianum has been used in European herbalism for the liver since at least the 1st century AD, when Pliny the Elder described it. The active complex — known as silymarin — is a group of flavonolignans concentrated in the seeds. We use a 400mg dose, which is at the higher end of what European supplements typically contain.

  3. 3

    Bitter herbs from European tradition

Dandelion, burdock root and artichoke leaf are three of the classic 'bitter' herbs of European herbal tradition, each used historically as a digestive and liver tonic. The bitter compounds (sesquiterpene lactones in dandelion, cynarin in artichoke, arctiopicrin in burdock) are the basis for their inclusion.

  4. 4

B-vitamins for energy metabolism and homocysteine

Vitamin B1 (thiamine), B12 and folic acid all contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to normal homocysteine metabolism — both EFSA-approved health claims. The liver is the body's primary metabolic organ, so these are the micronutrients that matter most in this context.

Inside every capsule

Liver Wellness contains four botanical extracts and six micronutrients. Here's a closer look at where each main herb comes from, what it contains, and how it has been used.

Serving size: 3 Capsules

Milk Thistle (Silymarin)

Silybum marianum 400mg

Milk thistle is a tall, prickly plant native to the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans. Its seeds contain a complex of flavonolignans collectively called silymarin — predominantly silybin A and B, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin. Silymarin has been the most-studied of any liver-related herbal extract, with literature spanning more than half a century.

In Bulgaria, milk thistle grows wild on dry, sunny slopes from the Rhodope foothills to the Strandzha mountains. We source from cooperatives that hand-harvest the seed heads in late summer, when silymarin content is at its peak.

Our 400mg dose per serving is at the higher end of what's typically used in European supplements, reflecting our decision to make Silybum marianum the cornerstone of the formula.

Dandelion

Taraxacum officinale 300mg

Dandelion is one of the most universally distributed plants on Earth, but in Bulgaria it carries particular significance — it's been a staple of folk herbal medicine since at least the medieval period and is mentioned in some of the earliest Bulgarian herbal texts. Both the root and the leaves are used; we use the whole-plant tradition.

Dandelion contains sesquiterpene lactones (the bitter compounds), inulin (a prebiotic fibre), potassium, polyphenols and triterpenes. The bitter principle is the basis for its traditional use as a digestive and liver tonic in European herbalism.

Burdock Root

Arctium lappa 150mg

Burdock is a tall biennial plant best known for the burs that stick to clothing and animal fur in autumn — the inspiration for the invention of Velcro. The root, however, is what European herbalists have used for centuries, traditionally as a 'blood purifier' and digestive bitter.

Burdock root contains inulin (up to 50% of dry weight), polyphenols (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid), the bitter compound arctiopicrin, and lignans. In Bulgaria it's sometimes called 'репей' and is collected from late autumn to early spring before the plant flowers.

Artichoke

Cynara scolymus 150mg

Artichoke leaf — not the edible flower head most people know from cooking — has been used in European herbalism for the liver and digestion since ancient Greek and Roman times. The Romans considered it a delicacy as well as a medicinal plant; the medicinal use spread throughout Mediterranean Europe.

The leaves contain caffeoylquinic acids (chlorogenic acid, cynarin), flavonoids (luteolin glycosides) and sesquiterpene lactones. Cynarin is the most-studied component and is the basis for the standardisation of most modern artichoke leaf extracts.
